            Toulouse et le Languedoc : La sculpture gothique (xiiie-xive siècles)

            Abstract
            Apparue discrètement sur les chapiteaux et les clefs de voûte des monastères cisterciens et des cathédrales de Béziers ou de Toulouse, la sculpture gothique accompagne aux xiie siècle la diffusion de « l'art français » en terres méridionales. Le chantier de la cathédrale Saint-Nazaire de Carcassonne allie pour la première fois tombeaux et statuaire, dans des formules neuves qui révèlent l'émergence de la sculpture languedocienne et la formation d'un atelier permanent. La grande période de la sculpture gothique méridionale se situe dans la première moitié du xive siècle, grâce aux commandes d'évêques liés à la papauté d'Avignon. Occupés par la construction de leurs palais et de leurs chapelles funéraires, ils attirent à Toulouse, Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges et Narbonne, des sculpteurs talentueux, dominés par la forte personnalité d'un imagier venu du Bordelais, le « Maître de Rieux », et par son œuvre insigne, le cycle des statues de la chapelle Notre-Dame de Rieux.

            Export search results
