    Abstract
    Desde la invención del cero hasta la elaboración de calendarios comple­jos, las especulaciones matemáticas de los antiguos mexicanos no han dejado de suscitar la atención del gran público. Sin embargo, salvo ciertos lugares comunes, se sabe poco todavía sobre las operaciones matemáticas y sobre los usos numéricos que desarrollaron en tiempos anteriores a la colonización europea. Esta obra aborda por primera vez las dimensiones sociales y culturales del número entre los mexicas, que ocupaban el centro de México durante la llegada de los españoles, y entre sus descendientes contemporáneos, representados por las poblaciones indígenas actuales. Los antiguos mexi­canos usaban los números para descifrar el porvenir, influenciar el destino y vincular al hombre con el cosmos; dichas preocupaciones de orden religioso explican la especificidad de los descubrimientos matemáticos que fueron capaces de alcanzar.

    Export search results
