Cátedra, política y magistratura en la España liberal : La huella de Nicolás Mª Garelly

Abstract

Nicolás María Garelly (1777–1850) was a Valencian who served in academia, politics and the judiciary. The driving force behind the University of Valencia in his day, he contributed to the consolidation of liberalism. He epitomised the politician with an extraordinary legal background. He was not a professional politician, although he spent much of his life in the highest institutions of the State, but rather a great jurist. This was the case when he was summoned to the capital to assist in the printing of the Novísima Recopilación, and on the many occasions when the Senate of Professors entrusted him with drafting reports requested of the University, or when the University itself proposed members for the provincial council in organising the defence against and repulsion of the French invaders. His leading role in constitutional development and codification are elements addressed in this work.
