The book Crime and Society: A Critical Analysis of Ecuadorian Criminal Justice offers an in-depth
reflection on the structure, evolution, and challenges of the criminal justice system in Ecuador.
Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines law, criminology, sociology, and forensic
medicine, the work examines how the state responds to crime, the tensions between security and
human rights, and the reforms necessary for a more equitable justice system. Over five chapters,
it analyzes the history and principles of Ecuadorian criminal law, the theory of crime and
punishment, the legal construction of criminal responsibility, alternatives to imprisonment, and
conditions in the prison system. It also addresses the relationship between criminal justice,
criminal policy, and society, highlighting the influence of punitive populism and the criminalization
of poverty. The text proposes a critical vision aimed at the structural transformation of the judicial
system, promoting restorative justice, rehabilitation, and social reintegration. With a solid and upto-

with human rights. El libro Delito y Sociedad: Un análisis crítico de la justicia penal ecuatoriana ofrece una
reflexión profunda sobre la estructura, evolución y desafíos del sistema penal en
Ecuador. A través de un enfoque interdisciplinario que combina el derecho, la
criminología, la sociología y la medicina legal, la obra examina el modo en que el Estado
responde al delito, las tensiones entre seguridad y derechos humanos, y las reformas
necesarias para una justicia más equitativa. A lo largo de cinco capítulos, se analizan la
historia y principios del Derecho Penal ecuatoriano, la teoría del delito y la pena, la
construcción jurídica de la responsabilidad penal, las medidas alternativas a la privación
de libertad y las condiciones del sistema penitenciario. Asimismo, se aborda la relación
entre justicia penal, política criminal y sociedad, destacando la influencia del populismo
punitivo y la criminalización de la pobreza. El texto propone una visión crítica orientada
a la transformación estructural del sistema judicial, promoviendo la justicia restaurativa,
