Throughout the modern era, Southern Europe saw the rise of multiple political martyr figures who embodied identities on various levels, providing different political movements with illustrious predecessors to be used as tools for legitimation and education. Drawing on several cases from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this volume examines how these categories evolved, how public and private memories were shaped, and how martyr figures influenced the development of modern political cultures. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to the history of the relationship between politics and religion through a fresh perspective on secularization.
