The study of the organization of ancient markets as well as the analysis of their equipments and amenities provide essential data for a better understanding of ancient economies. This volume offers new archaeological material to the study of ancient markets in a wide geographical and chronological area including most of the sites of the Mediterranean where new information related to this topic has been revealed. Several case studies shed light on the different steps of development of market-agorai, up to the building of macella. Studies of the commercial functions of several buildings help also to create a more comprehensive and concrete picture of the organization of sales. This publication constitutes the proceedings of a conference held in the French School of Athens in 2009, with the collaboration of the International Research Group of the CNRS "Markets in the Ancient World" and the Greek Archaeological Society at Athens. The aim of this research is to give the place that archaeological and historical studies on commercial places and buildings deserve in our analysis of ancient economies, and to illustrate the diversity of market practices in Antiquity.
