Abstract
Image or furniture? Sign or object? Renaissance Intarsia cannot be clearly categorized and instead create hallucinatory spaces in which ontological distinctions are impossible. Material; function; production and depiction are inextricably intertwined here and create a visual language unique to the medium. The countless trompe-l'œils question a logic of representation based on imitation and instead expose an excessive; exuberant and rampant mimesis. This study approaches the thoroughly hybrid object of wood marquetry with the help of different disciplinary perspectives and provides a media-materialistic and cultural-techniques-based analysis.
