            Abstract
            Quelle vision du monde et de la condition humaine la Thébaïde de Stace offre-t-elle au lecteur du premier siècle finissant ? Est-ce l’optimisme virgilien qui l’emporte ou le pessimisme de la Pharsale ? En choisissant de raconter le mythe tragique d’Étéocle et de Polynice, Stace place au centre de son épopée le conflit et la violence criminelle du nefas. Ils sont l’œuvre de la Furie Tisiphone, qui règne sur l’épopée comme un véritable diable. En face, Jupiter et les Olympiens se montrent incapables de faire triompher le bien : ils laissent pour cela la place à des hommes, comme Thésée, et à des allégories, comme Pietas ou Clementia. Car le bien, dans la Thébaïde, c’est le refus du conflit, le renoncement à la violence. On pourra même parler de non-violence, au sens où l’entend René Girard, dont les outils anthropologiques rendent bien compte du récit statien et de son étonnante modernité.

            Export search results
