1993 saw the foundation, under the aegis of the University of Pisa, of the International Association, Onomastica e Letteratura (O&L): this was followed in 1995 by the first of further 25 annual symposia, held in Pisa one year, the next at some other Italian university (e.g. Bari, Palermo, Turin, Macerata, Sassari, and others) and so on, in alternation. These meetings have, through the years, been attended both by well-established experts in the field of onomastics as well as by many keen young scholars. The objective of the Association was, and remains, to promote research into names - of people as well as places, animals and objects - in works of literature in general. A subject already widely studied in other countries. In 1999 O&L launched its own yearly journal, il Nome nel testo. Rivista internazionale di onomastica letteraria, along with the book series, Nominatio. Collana di studi onomastici. In both these publications O&L presents bibliographical repertoires of whatever has been published that particular year on the subject of Italian literary onomastics by both Italian and non-Italian authors. The review hosts contributions in Italian, English, French, and Spanish. To date, a great many papers have been published, the number growing year by year. Furthermore, the literature of languages besides Italian is now included in the subject range of the journal.
