Adolphe Gouhenant (1804-1871) was a forgotten actor of the social movement in the 19th century. His first achievement was the construction of a tower overlooking the city of Lyon, dedicated to the arts and sciences. He then became involved in the social movement under the banner of Etienne Cabet's Icarian communism. Accused of a communist plot in Toulouse in 1843, he was acquitted and lived for a few years as a painter, before being chosen by Cabet to lead the avant-garde of the community that the latter wanted to found in Texas. The fiasco of this experiment launched him into a new life in the United States where his artistic gifts allowed him to reinvent himself.
