Hilarion Roux, a Marseilles banker close to the Rothschilds, who came to Spain in 1843 to prospect for silver, was married and ennobled in Cartagena, and was a pioneer of Spanish mining and metallurgy. He extended his activities throughout the Mediterranean, and was notably behind the reopening of the Greek Laurium mines, before suffering a resounding bankruptcy in 1883. Beyond his flamboyant career, the Marquis d'Escombreras represents an exceptional moment in the history of Mediterranean mining.
