Spontaneous mutations are the only basis of novel genetic diversity since 20th century that manhood could adventure in choosing plants and animals suitable for domestication and breeding. A jump in plant breeding derived when ionizing radiation was revealed to modify the genetic make-up of organisms. Advanced at the beginning of the 20th century by Dutch botanist and geneticist Hugo de Vries in his Die Mutations theory (1901–03; The Mutation Theory) helped to create variability to crop improvement. The earlier epoch has seen a rapid emergence of new tools of significance to plant breeders, including biotechnology, bioinformatics, genetic transformation and genomics. With these trappings, and with the profligate accumulating knowledge of plant mutagenesis, the earlier discernment of mutation induction as a random, uninhibited process of empiric nature has also altered, and plant mutagenesis is now fully resourcing on advances in molecular and bio-technologies, such as TILLING, and is an indispensable tool also in investigation on gene discovery and gene function. They have assuredly taken new vigour to plant mutation breeding, and have reformed this discipline into the mainstream of science-based breeding. Hence, this book updates the different type of mutation and their effects which brought knowledge into the mutation breeding.en_US
