publisher.peerreviewpolicyEdward Elgar Publishing is an established scholarly publisher with a strong international reputation in the social sciences and law. We take great care in reviewing book projects to ensure that projects are of a high academic quality and that there is sufficient scholarly interest to ensure relevance.

An experienced commissioning editor who specialises in the discipline must first accept a proposal for consideration. If a proposal is taken forward then the commissioning editor, or under their supervision the assistant commissioning editor, will coordinate the review process. The process can vary on a title by title basis according to the needs of the proposal but the standard framework for monographs is as follows.

Proposals are submitted to three or four external peer reviewers who are asked to comment on the academic merit and contribution to the literature that the book will make. Where appropriate sample chapters or draft materials are included in the proposal.

Our normal requirement is at least two detailed reviews from expert academicians before proceeding depending upon the nature of the work. In more complicated cases or where the author is less experienced this will increase.

The commissioning editor will then collate the review comments and feedback to the author. Where necessary the commissioning editor will discuss the feedback further with the reviewers to ensure that they can present a coherent report to the author. The commissioning editor may also edit the review comments to ensure the reviewers remain anonymous. Depending on this feedback a book is either accepted, accepted with revisions or rejected. There may also be a number of iterations with the commissioning editor entering into a dialogue with authors and anonymous reviewers.

If we are unable to proceed with the project we aim to make a decision within four to six weeks of submission to give authors certainty and to allow them to approach other publishers while the project remains current. We seek to keep authors informed about the progress of the review process.

The book proposal is then contracted subject to satisfaction with the final manuscript. Final manuscripts are read by leading scholars who may also contribute an endorsement.

For individual monograph book series’ the series editors or members of the editorial board with relevant expertise will also approve the book manuscript for inclusion. Depending upon the series this may be part of or in addition to the process outlined above.

Once a book is accepted and checks have been completed we aim to publish the book within seven months. It is then immediately available in print and for university libraries around the world on http://www.ElgarOnline.com*
